22 Shevat – The Kotzker Rebbe1 min read

22 Shevat is the yahrzeit of the legendary Kotzker Rebbe, Reb Menachem Mendel (ben Yehuda Leibush) Morgenstern zy”a. He was a talmid of the Chozeh of Lublin, the Yid Hakodosh and the Rebbe Reb Bunim of Peshischa. 

Reb Menachem Mendel passed away on a Thursday between Yisro and Mishpatim. The date of his passing, כ“ב ב‘שבט, is equal in gematriya to the words הר סיני, a reference to the giving of the Torah discussed in both of these parshios. 

The Kotzker closeted himself in seclusion for the last years 20 years of his life.  This may be seen as alluded to in the pasuk: ויעמד העם מרחק ומשה נגש אל הערפל אשר שם האלקים. The words נגש אל הערפל – “approached the clouds,” may allude to the Kotzker being in seclusion from the public. The last letters of אשר שם האלקים are the initials of רבי מנחם מענדיל. 

The Kotzker was known to conduct himself in a strict manner, alluded to by the name of the parsha of the week of his passing, משפטים. The first posuk of this parsha states: אלה המשפטים אשר תשים לפניהם. The closing letters of these words are the initials of האדמו”ר רבי מנחם מענדיל מורגנשטרן. 

In parshas Mishpatim (24:1) the pasuk states: ואל משה אמר עלה אל יקוק אתה ואהרן נדב ואביהוא ושבעים מזקני ישראל והשתחויתם מרחק. The words עלה אל יקוק (“rising to Hashem”) allude to the soul leaving this world. The closing letters of the words נדב ואביהוא ושבעים מזקני ישראל והשתחויתם מרחק may be seen as the initials of אדמו”ר מנחם מענדיל קוצקער בן יהודה לייביש.
